How to Open an M3U Playlist in VLC (Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone)
Step-by-step instructions to play an M3U or M3U8 playlist in VLC media player from a file or a URL, on desktop and mobile — plus the settings that fix buffering and the limits to know.
Why VLC is a good first player
VLC media player is free, open source, available on almost every platform and plays practically every format. It opens M3U and M3U8 playlists natively, from a file or a URL, with no add-on. That makes it the ideal tool to test a playlist: if a stream does not play in VLC, the problem is almost always the stream itself, not your player.
VLC is less suited to everyday TV watching: it has no programme guide (EPG) for IPTV playlists and no remote-friendly channel grid. For a living-room experience, see our guides for Kodi and TiviMate.
Before you start
You need either:
- an M3U or M3U8 file saved on your device, or
- a playlist URL — for example the M3U link of a playlist saved in your M3utify account, which looks like
https://m3utify.com/get.php?username=…&password=…&type=m3u_plus&output=ts.
Download VLC only from the official site, videolan.org, or from your device's official app store. Copies found elsewhere are a common source of malware.
On Windows and Linux
Open a playlist file
- Launch VLC.
- Click Media → Open File… (or press Ctrl + O) and select your .m3u / .m3u8 file. You can also drag the file onto the VLC window.
- The first entry starts playing. Press Ctrl + L to show the playlist and double-click any channel to switch.
Open a playlist URL
- Click Media → Open Network Stream… (or press Ctrl + N).
- Paste the playlist URL in the Network tab.
- Click Play. VLC downloads the list and plays the first entry; open the playlist with Ctrl + L to browse the rest.
On macOS
- Launch VLC.
- For a file: File → Open File… (⌘ + O). For a URL: File → Open Network… (⌘ + N), paste the address and click Open.
- Show the playlist with Window → Playlist (⌘ + Shift + P) to choose a channel.
On Android
- Install VLC for Android from Google Play.
- For a file: open the Browse tab, navigate to the folder where the .m3u file is stored (usually Download) and tap it.
- For a URL: go to More → New stream (the exact label can vary slightly by version), paste the URL and confirm.
- The playlist opens as a list; tap a channel to play it.
On iPhone and iPad
- Install VLC for Mobile from the App Store.
- For a URL: tap Network → Open Network Stream, paste the address and tap Open Network Stream.
- For a file: share it to VLC from the Files app, or use Network → Wi-Fi Sharing to upload it from a computer on the same network.
Fixing buffering and stuttering in VLC
VLC's default network cache is short, which favours quick start-up over stability. If streams freeze every few seconds:
- Go to Tools → Preferences (macOS: VLC → Settings).
- At the bottom left, select Show settings: All.
- Open Input / Codecs and find Network caching (ms).
- Raise the value to 3000–5000 ms and save. Restart VLC.
You can also set the cache for a single stream: in Open Network Stream, tick Show more options and change Caching.
If the picture is choppy but the network is fine, check Tools → Preferences → Input / Codecs → Hardware-accelerated decoding and set it to Automatic. More causes and fixes are in how to fix IPTV buffering.
Streams that need a specific user agent
Some servers only answer requests that carry a particular user agent. VLC lets you set it per stream: in Open Network Stream → Show more options, add to the Edit options field:
:http-user-agent=MyPlayer/1.0
Inside a playlist, the same option can be written on its own line just before the URL: #EXTVLCOPT:http-user-agent=MyPlayer/1.0.
What VLC cannot do with IPTV playlists
- No EPG: VLC ignores XMLTV guides, so there is no "now / next" information.
- No Xtream Codes login: VLC cannot sign in with server/username/password — but it can open the M3U URL that Xtream services expose (the
get.phplink). - No catch-up or recordings for IPTV channels.
- Large playlists are slow to browse: VLC's playlist view is not designed for thousands of channels. Filter the list to the groups you watch with the M3utify editor before opening it.
Common problems
"VLC is unable to open the MRL"
VLC could not reach the stream. Check the URL (no spaces, nothing missing at the end), test it again later, and check our guide to IPTV stream errors for HTTP codes such as 403 or 404.
The playlist opens but only one channel plays
That is normal: VLC plays the first entry. Open the playlist view (Ctrl + L) to choose another channel.
Channel names show strange characters
The file is not encoded in UTF-8. Re-save it as UTF-8 (or export it again from M3utify, whose exports are always UTF-8).
