M3U vs Xtream Codes: What Is the Difference and Which Should You Use?
A clear comparison of the two ways to load IPTV into a player — a playlist URL (M3U) or a server login (Xtream Codes API) — covering features, EPG, VOD, security and which players support each.
Two ways to deliver the same channels
When you set up an IPTV player, it almost always asks the same question: M3U playlist or Xtream Codes login? Both give the player the same channels; the difference is how the information travels.
- M3U is a file: one text document listing every channel with its metadata and stream URL. The player downloads it in one go.
- Xtream Codes is an API: the player logs into a server with a username and password, then asks for the live channels, films, series and guide separately, as it needs them.
How M3U works
An M3U playlist is a list of entries like this:
#EXTM3U x-tvg-url="https://example.com/guide.xml.gz"
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="arte.fr" tvg-logo="https://example.com/arte.png" group-title="France",Arte
https://example.com/live/arte.m3u8
The player reads the whole file, builds its channel list from the group-title categories, and loads the guide from the URL in the header (or from an EPG URL you enter separately). Our guide What is an M3U file details the syntax.
Strengths: universal (every player and many TVs accept it), simple, easy to edit, easy to back up.
Weaknesses: films and series are just more entries in the list, the guide must be configured separately in some players, and very large files are slow to download and parse.
How Xtream Codes works
With Xtream Codes, you enter three things: server URL, username, password. The player then calls a standard set of endpoints on that server:
player_api.php— account information and the lists of live channels, films (VOD) and series, each with categories, posters and descriptions;xmltv.php— the programme guide for the account;get.php— the same content as a classic M3U playlist, for players that only understand M3U.
The original "Xtream Codes" panel software was discontinued in 2019, but its API became a de facto standard: many servers and nearly all IPTV players use the same format today.
Strengths: live TV, films and series in separate sections with artwork; guide loaded automatically; faster start-up on large catalogues because the player loads categories on demand; account details (expiry, connections) visible in the player.
Weaknesses: requires a compatible server; not supported by basic players such as VLC (which can still open the get.php M3U link).
Side-by-side comparison
| M3U playlist | Xtream Codes API | |
|---|---|---|
| What you enter | One URL (or a file) | Server + username + password |
| Live TV | Yes | Yes |
| Films / series sections | No (mixed in the list) | Yes, with posters and details |
| Programme guide | Via x-tvg-url or a separate EPG URL | Automatic (xmltv.php) |
| Catch-up / replay | Depends on player and attributes | Supported by many players |
| Player support | Universal | Most IPTV apps; not VLC |
| Editing | Edit the file or its source | Done on the server side |
| Large catalogues | Slower (whole file each time) | Faster (loaded by category) |
Security: credentials in URLs
Both methods usually embed credentials in URLs — the M3U link from an Xtream server contains username= and password=, and Xtream stream URLs contain them in the path. Treat these links like passwords:
- do not post them in forums, screenshots or support tickets;
- use separate credentials per household or device when your service allows it;
- regenerate them if you suspect they leaked. In M3utify, the Xtream Panel lets you regenerate your password at any time; old links stop working immediately.
Which one should you choose?
- You use TiviMate, IPTV Smarters, GSE or a similar app: choose Xtream Codes. You get separate film and series sections and the guide works without extra steps. See TiviMate and IPTV Smarters.
- You use VLC, Kodi IPTV Simple Client, a smart-TV app that only accepts a URL, or you want to edit the list yourself: choose M3U. See VLC and Kodi.
- You want both: you do not have to choose once and for all. A playlist edited in M3utify can be exported as M3U and exposed through M3utify's Xtream-compatible API, so each device uses the method it handles best.
How M3utify connects the two
M3utify works on your playlist as M3U — you import a file or URL, then filter, rename, merge, check links and add the guide in the editor. From there you can:
- download the result as M3U/M3U8 (plus JSON, CSV, XSPF);
- save it to your account and use its M3U link;
- generate Xtream Codes credentials in the Xtream Panel: server
https://m3utify.com, a unique username and password. Your edited playlist, its guide and its VOD are then served throughplayer_api.php,xmltv.phpandget.phpto any compatible player.
Change the playlist once, and every device — M3U or Xtream — gets the update.
FAQ
Is Xtream Codes better quality than M3U?
No. The streams are the same; only the way the player receives the list differs. Quality depends on the source and your connection.
Can I convert Xtream credentials into an M3U link?
Yes. Most Xtream servers provide get.php?username=…&password=…&type=m3u_plus&output=ts, which returns an M3U playlist. Use output=m3u8 for HLS streams if your player prefers it.
Is the Xtream Codes API legal?
The API is just a protocol, like M3U is just a file format. Legality depends on the content served — see our guide to legal IPTV sources.
